Formerly a French province, Normandy, is now divided into two regions bordering the English Channel: Lower-Normandy and Upper-Normandy.
Normandy is reminiscent of a great landscape painting, with cattle grazing in the fields and traditional rustic wood-framed houses that contrast the nearby modern buildings.
Mont-Saint-Michel is situated, facing the Channel, at the Lower Normandy's western extremity. The abbey is built on solid granite, with a quaint little village at her base. Agriculture is mainly dairy, some fishing and of course, apples.
Lower Normandy is the home to the renowned Calvados brandy and also produces some superb ciders.
