Estagel offers village life at its best: great wine making, bustling local shops and a full calendar of traditional and social events. Our three storey, stone-built village house has a large roof terrace on a quiet, narrow street just behind the village square. There is a romantic four poster bed, large dining and sitting room, modern kitchen and shower, loads of storage space and a beautiful spiral staircase.

The property: L'Avenir is a traditional village house. The stone foundations are part of the ancient circle of houses built by the Catalans for defense. The ground floor has a marble and wood entrance hall leading to the spiral staircase and two large storage rooms. (These house the central heating and washing machine but the rooms are available to tenants to store bikes and beach gear for holidays or furniture etc. for longer term house-hunters.)

The first floor has a modern fitted kitchen with gas hobs, small electric oven, large fridge and freezer plus a balcony with French windows. On the same floor is the master bedroom with a four poster bed, the shower room, separate WC and the long lounge/dining room. The big dining table seats eight and the kitchen table four. The lounge area has a leather armchair and two-seater sofa plus a top-quality double sofa bed that seats four. We have a large television with at least eight English channels, many French and other European channels.

On the top floor is a large, bright bedroom furnished in Arabian style with double bed, majlis and walk-in wardrobe. Next to it is a small bedroom with a double bed and access to the roof terrace.

Outside Area: Our large, private roof terrace has a wooden table, parasol and six matching chairs; a barbecue and sunlounger for lazy days enjoying pastries, bread, wine, cheese and other local treats.

Surrounding Area: Estagel is 40 minutes drive from sandy beaches and close to many wonderful natural swimming pools in the pure rivers. The mountains hold many delightful thermal springs and beautiful walks for all abilities. The coast has miles of soft sand and also rocky coves where the Pyrénées meet the sea. Spain is just fifty minutes drive for shopping trips and great days out to Girona, the Costa Brava and Barcelona.

The village has a hotel and restaurant, friendly local café bars, three bakers, butcher, internet cafe, three hairdressers, beauty salon, superb pizza baker, estate agents, doctors, pharmacie, even a vet. The village is small so our excellent local wine producers can all be explored on foot, which is probably just as well!

The first of the Cathar Castles, Queribus, can be seen on the precipice above the village, guarding the pass into the Corbierres mountains of neighbouring Aude. The French statesman and architect Vauban created mighty fortresses in Perpignan, Villefranche and the picturesque port of Collioure with it's many cafés and galleries. Catalonia is full of beautiful Romanesque churches and has several amazing abbeys including Serrabonne and St Martin de Canigou which is perched on the side of the magnificent Pyrenean peak of the same name.
