THE VILLAGE - Roquebrun, with it's medieval cobbled lanes, high perched castle ruins, Mediterranean garden and most importantly the stunning river Orb flowing past its doorstep is quite simply hard to beat. It's known as the 'Petit Nice' of the Languedoc, but it's more the Jewel in the Crown of Languedoc come the summer months. Thanks also to its warm micro climate the village enjoys year round sunshine which is highlighted by the regionally famous Mimosa Festival held in Feb, when thousands of people from all around descend on the village for its festivities. During the summer the river becomes a hive of activity, with a beautiful swimming area around the bridge and the old mill, and a specially converted safe swimming area for children. Kayaking is particularly popular on this section of the Orb, and there's a rental company that provides transport up stream for anything from a gentle 2 hour down stream paddle to a 2 night kayaking safari. You'll also find tennis within the village, and two golf courses within a 30 minute drive. Behind the village are endless walking trails, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside (the tourist office has walking maps). The village has 2 good restaurants, a pizzeria, bar, small supermarket, bakery, post office, tourist office and numerous wine 'caves' where one can sample the local drop, of which there are many. There is also a small market selling basic produce twice a week.

OUR OTHER DINING TABLE - 10 seconds walk up the street from the front door and you'll find a lovely communal area sitting under the high walls of the village church where there's a table and stunning views of the river and valley. Regularly in summer we bring food & wine up here and enjoy our dinner outside, often well into the night.

THE AREA - Historical Languedoc, once home to the Cathars, is scattered with ancient hilltop fortifications, stunning scenery, quiet villages and beautiful rivers & gorges. 10 minutes drive from Roquebrun is the market town of St. Chinian, with it's superb weekend market, plus all the conveniences of banks, supermarkets, medical practices and other commerce of a small town. However it is more renown for its AOC wine production, which is evident from the surrounding fields and countryside that are quite literally carpeted in vineyards. 35 minutes from the village is the cathedral city of Beziers with its famed bullring and summer festivals. A further 15 mins from there and you reach the coast, with endless beaches in either direction. Going up river from the village you will find the breathtaking Gorges d'Heric, with its towering rock faces and stunning swimming holes of crystal clear mountain water, perfect for summer daytrips. Further afield is the astonishing old fortified city of Carcassonne, the most famous castle in France, and for those interested in the history of the area and inparticular the Cathars there are many stunning old castle ruins perched high on top of the surrounding peaks in the Corbieres area. The Spanish border is a mere hour away, and door to door, Barcelona is 3 hours drive. In winter there is fantastic skiing in the Pyrenees, only a 3 hour drive from Roquebrun to the slopes. The Canal du Midi, which runs from Toulouse to Sete is another famous landmark in the area, and well worth a few days outing on a barge. However the real pleasures around Roquebrun and to be found much closer, and often there is very little reason to even leave the village for days on end, such is it's charm.
