Les Charmes is situated in an area wonderful for walking and for wild life, close (500m) to the medieval village of Chateldon where there is a general store, newsagents, pharmacy and a doctors' surgery.
The accommodation is an upstairs apartment in a chalet style house with a separate entrance. There are 3 bedrooms (2 double and 1 twin bed sleeping up to 6 people). There is a living room with a small, well equipped American style kitchen, bathroom with electrically heated water and separate WC. In cold weather there is a log fire and there are electric heaters in each room. The apartment has a sunny terrace with barbecue and a woodland garden with spectacular mountain views.
There is off road parking on the drive. Linen can be provided at a small extra cost and there is a washing machine. A cot, high chair and some baby equipment are available and the property also benefits from telephone and an ADSL internet connection.
The village of Chateldon has a fascinating history dating from the early middle ages. The medieval castle still stands and many of the buildings in the village centre date back to the 14th century with the town fortifications still in evidence. Chateldon lies on the western edge of the Montagne Bourbonnaise and the northern edge of the Livradois-Forez Park, the largest nature park in Europe. The region has exceptional natural landscapes and is rich in flora and fauna.
To the west lies the Limagne, where the Allier and Dore rivers converge providing a haven for a wide variety of migratory birds. There are lots of lovely walks in the area, from the gentle to the more demanding. Some can be taken from the house itself The Montagne Bourbonnaise rises to 1300m and is a favourite for walkers, cyclists and horseriders. Two Grande Randonnee trails, the GR3 and the GR3A, pass nearby.
The Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park is an hour's drive away where there is spectacular walking and climbing, as well as skiing and snow-boarding in winter. You can also visit Vulcania, the volcano exhibition centre and museum. There is a range of lakes in the area to swim in.
Vichy, an elegant spa town with a plan d'eau is 20 minutes drive away. Concerts, plays and operas are regularly performed in the beautiful opera house in Vichy. There is a 6 screen cinema and there are some nice restaurants. The town regularly hosts national and international sporting events. The Rivers Sioule and Allier offer canoeing. The whole area is famous for its Romanesque churches and its medieval castles, some of which are open in season. The chateau at nearby Busset has exhibitions and concerts. There are also many beautiful towns with medieval centres to visit such as Moulins, Billom, Thiers, and Clermont-Ferrand.
Festivals and cultural events nearby include the Cultures of the World Festival held in Gannat at the end of July, and the famous international music festival at La Chaise-Dieu in the autumn.
